The Italian energy company Eni has announced a world class supergiant gas discovery at its Zohr Prospect, in the deep waters of Egypt. The discovery could hold a potential of 30 trillion cubic feet of lean gas in place covering an area of about 100 square kilometers.

Zohr is the largest gas discovery ever made in the Mediterranean Sea and could become one of the largest natural-gas finds in the world. This exploration success will give a major contribution in satisfying Egypt’s natural gas demand for decades and be able to transform the energy scenario.

This outstanding result confirms Eni’s expertise and its technological innovation capacity and shows the strength of the cooperation spirit amongst all the company’s units which are at the foundation of this great success.

The exploration activities are central to the growth strategy, confirming Eni’s leading position in the industry by adopting new exploration concepts, leading edge technologies and operational approaches.

ENI, which holds 100 % of the concession for the gas field’s exploitation, will immediately appraise the field with the aim of accelerating a fast track development of the discovery that will use at best the existing offshore and onshore infrastructures. Consequences of the discovery of the supergiant field will depend on how the company decides to transport the extracted gas to Europe as no gas pipeline connects Egypt and Italy now. For the transportation of gas to the European countries, new pipelines are planned to be built in the future or new liquefaction plants, where the gas will be turned into liquid to be then returned to gas form at regasification plant in Italy.

Norwegian oil & gas industry can play a constructive part in developing innovative solutions for both cleaner and safer gas production as well as catch the opportunity to supply cutting edge technologies. Norway is also a substantial exporter of oil & gas related products and services from subsea production equipment to production systems, maintenance, modifications and operations services as well as solutions for extending the lifetime of oil and gas fields. The broad experience and know-how enables Norway to understand challenges and apply knowledge to create optimal solutions.
