Aquaculture is one of the most important economic markets in Chile. And among the diverse fish farming activities in the country, the Atlantic salmon aquaculture is by far the largest.
Today the aquaculture industry in Chile is the third largest in the world, accounting for 12% of the global production. The country is the world’s second biggest producer of salmon with around 1 million tons per year. It is a mature market with technologies very similar to those used in Norway.
The Chilean authorities and industry have recognized the risks associated with the salmon stocking densities, and new regulations have been introduced to implement stricter rules. The authorities will regulate the volume of fish farming based on constant analysis of biological factors in order to ensure further sustainable development.
Considering that the current focus of the Chilean aquaculture industry is to grow in a sustainable way, there are opportunities for Norwegian suppliers of technology and equipment. There is a need for solutions that focus on promoting efficient sustainable production. The opportunities include, among others, technology for recirculation and water treatment, fish feed, fish health and genetics.
